SGU (NCSU) c/o 2015! residencies generally require an internship (but not all) and are 2-4 years depending upon the program. the average length is 3 years. residencies are done with the goal of specialty and board certification at the end. Residencies and internships are paid. You are a doctor, not a student.

After 3rd year we go directly into our clinical year. What we do is entirely up to us. There are research programs we can apply for.
