Mystery solved. You will probably not be able to get through unless it is an official quest. The necessary animal combination is in the same room on the walls before you get to the pillars. If I remember correctly, back to front, left to right, the combination is Snake, Whale, Whale, Eagle. The rotation of the pillars themselves is the trick.
