I know there is a silver mine somewhere but getting gold is pretty annoying. Rarely NPCs can drop gold coins but the most efficient method is mining obsidian in the volcano. It will rarely give goldstone and I mean rarely but there is an assload of obsidian to mine. You'll be tossing out thousands of obsidian just to get the gold you need.
