They both arrived damaged. For the 1st item, they issued a partial refund. For the 2nd item, since it was a decent amount of damage (I offered and sent photos of the package which had no protective padding and was damaged), they stated they can issue a full refund once it is returned.
If this was the case, Mercari should let them keep the item, they should get a refund, AND funds should be released to the seller. Insurance is to protect the seller, not the buyer. You need to file a claim and ask the buyer to save the packaging as USPS may need them to bring it to their local post office for an inspection.
