I recently bought my first 1911 (Ultra Carry II), and was a little clumsy the first few times cleaning it. While it does take a little longer than my Glock, I can now field strip in about a minute and detail strip in about 5-10 minutes. You might ask if there is another salesperson that is more familiar with the gun.
Make one or two strokes the length of the sandpaper with medium pressure (start lightly to get the feel -- you don't want to take off too much), then try starting the sight into the slide's dovetail again.
