If it is throwing the code when hauling heavy loads only and not when unloaded, that would "from lots of reading" point me to believe the CP3 is worn out.This is also something that is not very common on these Duramax engines but it happens more often than an ECM issue. The most common problem on the Duramax is the EGR. That and head gasket issues. As far as electrical issues, this is really the only other one I know of. ECM issues are not common at all.
