You know it's possible to siege and capture a settlement as an independent clan, so you can get territory even without being a kingdom. But … Those 3 boxes are all ticked. The one box that is not ticked is the Clan Independence box. Before I even started completing the quest, I left my previous kingdom that I was a mercenary for and as far as I know I'm not with any other kingdom. I've also been having this problem and just managed to find something that's a workaround, for me at least. Install the kingdom color changer mod and override your player faction colour. I had to use a dll unblocker to get the game to not crash. Once you're in the game with the override, the banner editor will let you change your background colour.
